About This Service

What Is Oral Cancer
Screening?

Oral and oropharyngeal cancers can begin as a sore, patch, lump, or tissue change that does not resolve. Screening looks for findings that warrant monitoring or referral, but it cannot by itself diagnose cancer.

At Advanced Dental Care, Dr. Talwar examines the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate, throat, and neck during a comprehensive evaluation and asks about symptoms and risk factors.

VELscope fluorescence may be used as an adjunct to the standard visual and tactile exam. Any suspicious area requires appropriate follow-up, which may include re-evaluation, specialist referral, or biopsy.

Who Should Get
Screened?

Oral cancer screening is recommended for all adults, not just high-risk patients. You are especially encouraged to schedule a screening if you:

  • Use tobacco products in any form, cigarettes, cigars, chew, or vaping
  • Consume alcohol heavily or on a frequent basis
  • Have had a prior oral lesion, biopsy, or abnormal screening result
  • Have a history of HPV infection or head and neck radiation
  • Spend significant time outdoors with frequent lip sun exposure
  • Have noticed any sore, patch, or lump in your mouth that has not healed

Screening is included with every comprehensive exam at no extra charge.

We recommend annual oral cancer screenings for all adults. If you use tobacco, drink heavily, or have had prior oral lesions, more frequent screenings, every 6 months, may be advised by Dr. Talwar.
The screening is a thorough visual examination of your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat. Dr. Talwar looks for unusual sores, red or white patches, or any growths. It takes just a few minutes and is typically comfortable.
Warning signs include persistent mouth sores that do not heal, white or red patches, lumps or thickening in the cheek, difficulty swallowing, numbness, and unexplained bleeding. If you notice any of these, call us to schedule a visit right away.
Risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, HPV infection, excessive sun exposure to the lips, and family history of cancer. However, 25% of cases occur in people with no known risk factors, which is why universal screening matters.
At Advanced Dental Care, oral cancer screening is included as part of every comprehensive dental exam at no additional charge. Most dental insurance plans also cover routine cancer screenings.
Dr. Talwar will explain the finding, monitor it at a follow-up visit, or arrange a simple brush biopsy and referral to an oral surgeon if needed. The vast majority of flagged areas turn out to be benign.
VELscope uses a safe blue-spectrum fluorescent light to illuminate oral tissues. Healthy tissue glows green; abnormal tissue, including pre-cancerous cells, absorbs the light and appears dark, making it visible years earlier than traditional visual exam.
While not all cases are preventable, you can significantly reduce risk by avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, protecting your lips from sun exposure, getting the HPV vaccine, and attending regular screenings at our Leesburg, VA office.
