Night Guards and Teeth Grinding

Many people grind their teeth in their sleep without knowing it. A custom night guard is a simple way to protect enamel and ease jaw strain.

Grinding or clenching your teeth, known as bruxism, often happens during sleep, so many people have no idea they do it. The first clues are usually a sore jaw in the morning, headaches near the temples, sensitive teeth, or a partner mentioning the sound.

Why Grinding Matters

The forces involved in nighttime grinding are much stronger than normal chewing. Over months and years, that can flatten and chip teeth, crack fillings and crowns, increase sensitivity, and contribute to jaw joint (TMJ) discomfort. Stress, sleep issues, and bite alignment can all play a role.

How a Night Guard Helps

A night guard is a thin, custom-fitted appliance worn over your teeth while you sleep. It does not necessarily stop the grinding, but it puts a protective layer between your upper and lower teeth so the guard takes the wear instead of your enamel. Many patients also find their jaw feels more relaxed in the morning.

Custom vs. Store-Bought

Over-the-counter guards are bulky and generic, and they can shift during the night. A custom guard is made from precise impressions or scans of your teeth, so it is thinner, more comfortable, and stays in place. A better fit also makes it more likely you will actually wear it every night.

Making It Part of Your Routine

  • Wear it every night, not just on stressful nights
  • Rinse and brush it gently each morning, then let it dry
  • Store it in its case, away from heat and pets
  • Bring it to checkups so we can check fit and wear
